My co-founder and I had known one another for years.
Our kids grew up together as we raised our families in a small coastal town in Western Australia where surfing, camping, backyard slumber parties, and nights around the fire pit were common.
We had a couple of old-school cotton sleeping bags that had been passed down through the family, and used (and loved) a million times. These things were comfortable, warm, soft, and well made - all the things you want in an old-school, traditional cotton sleeping bag to use on the boat, in the back of the car, at a movie night, or watching the sun go down over the Indian Ocean.
Take nothing away from modern day, technical, sleeping bags with their focus on shape, fit, weight, compactness, and all the other tech features - but they weren't cotton, they weren't built for comfort, and they didn’t get better with age.
Everytime we pulled out the 2 OG’s, people would ask, "where'd you get those?” It was from this repeated question that the decision to launch VESSL emerged.
Our ambition is simple - to build a premium quality product, that can be used repeatedly to create memories, connection, and community in a ‘real’ way, and then be passed on to the next generation - worn, a little faded - but well-loved, eternally practical, and eliciting the comment, “that sleeping bag”...
